The Gospel of Jesus Christ Leads Men to Conquer the Great American Desert
Preview of Unit II
We are about to follow the Saints during the second great period of Church History. This period begins with the consternation in Nauvoo over the death of the Prophet and closes with the end of conflict between Mormons and non-Mormons in Utah. In these chapters we will witness the restored gospel at work in the hearts of men and women. We will thrill at the faith which accompanies the exodus of a whole people west to the Rocky Mountains. We will make a march of 2,000 miles with the Mormon Battalion to the Pacific Ocean. In these pages we will delve into camp life on the plains-see its joys and its tragedies-and we will thrill at the faith which prompted mighty sacrifices. Above all, we will come to realize the part played by faith in conquering the Great American Desert, and the powerful spirit of gathering which is filling these desert lands with converts from all the earth.
