Acknowledgments

This book is dedicated to my beloved eternal companion, Shirley, whose faith in me is both humbling and inspiring. Our eight children (David, Barbara, Howard, Sandra, Allen, Jeffrey, Heather, and Mary) were convinced that "Dad could do it." I appreciate deeply their confidence.

It is difficult to list the names of all who provided assistance to me in writing this book. The many African members of the Church who have made me welcome and shared their testimonies; beloved missionaries whose examples of courage and faith have sustained me-all have my deepest gratitude and respect. So too do professional colleagues from many lands with whom I was privileged to associate in Africa over the years on World Health Organization committees. Val MacMurray, who shares a love for Africa, encouraged me to write the book. Elder Robert E. Sackley and his wife, Marjorie, provided invaluable insights and perspective gained from service as missionaries in Nigeria and freely shared both their knowledge and their love with me. Special thanks go to Elders Marvin J. Ashton, Neal A. Maxwell, and Jack H. Goaslind for their gentle, loving encouragement and sublime example. Carolyn Keight and Janet Morley typed the manuscript with skill and patience.
