Appendix 2

[to "The Kirtland Hebrew School (1835-36)"]

Joseph Smith's Use of Hebrew Language

The prophet followed Seixas' pronunciation and transliteration of Hebrew letters and sounds. For example, from A Manual Hebrew Grammar, J. Seixas, 1834:

5 = au as in cause

.. = a as in ale

= kh and = gn

note: when ends a syllable it is sounded ng

10 = au = kau = kau = rau

When the prophet studied the Hebrew Grammar under Seixas, he may have first seen the following words on the pages and in the exercises indicated:

12 #5

rau-kee-ang (="expanse"; Book of Abraham, facsimiles 1 and 2)

15 middle

bau-rau (="created"; Gen. 1:1 )

50 #53 (2)

nau-voo (=" beautiful"; see Isa. 52:7 "How beautiful upon the mountains ..." Hebrew: transliteration: mah nauvoo)

55 #63

Eloheem adonauy (= "Lord God"; Gen. 2:4 )
