Code of Hammurabi

Hammurabi

Translated by L. W. King

About This Book

The Code is concerned mainly with justice: "An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth"- punishment that was meted out literally, with many harsher sentences as well. Nevertheless, its strictness must have done much to ensure an orderly society, and it gives us a fascinating look at what life was like in ancient Babylonia. It is also interesting to compare the Code of Hammurabi with the law of Moses as outlined in the Old Testament.
